The Importance of Aging Creatively
Creativity is one of the wonderful things we can carry with us throughout our lives—and it may become even more valuable as we grow older. Research suggests that creative activities such as painting, drawing, music, writing, and dancing can support brain health, lift our mood, reduce feelings of loneliness, and give us a greater sense of purpose and connection.
Studies of older adults have linked participation in the arts with improved well-being, quality of life, and cognitive health. But perhaps the best part is that you don’t have to be “artistic” to benefit from being creative. Every time you pick up a paintbrush, try something new, solve a creative problem, or simply play with color, you are giving your brain a chance to learn and grow.
Creativity gives us something to look forward to, something to share with others, and something that is uniquely our own. We may grow older, but we never have to stop growing, learning, or creating.
